Universal Sans is an award-winning customisable typeface platform. In 2020 the project was awarded the ultimate creative accolade – a rare D&AD Black Pencil – reserved for work that is ground-breaking in its field and fundamentally changes the rules of a category. Custom type has typically involved high costs and long lead times, putting it out of reach for most projects. Universal Sans seeks to change this by making custom type more accessible to a wider audience.
The platform gives designers more insight and control of the type design process and uses automation to make the production of custom type instantaneous and cost-effective. The typeface platform features six variable axes with an extensive range of stylistic alternates to allow for an infinite number of unique outcomes. While there are limitless possibilities, the typeface system adheres to fundamental typographic principles to ensure the end product is cohesive and functional.
